Eating for Performance: How to Fuel Your Workouts Like an Athlete

If you’re showing up for CrossFit, lifting heavy, or pushing your conditioning, you’re already training like an athlete.

But are you eating like one?

Whether your goal is to get stronger, leaner, or just recover better, how you fuel your workouts matters — and at 033 Strength and Conditioning, we help you dial in both your training and your nutrition to get the most out of every rep.


🧠 Why Pre- and Post-Workout Nutrition Matters

You don’t need to overthink it — but when you eat and what you eat around your workouts can directly impact:

✅ Your energy during training
✅ Your strength and endurance
✅ Your recovery time
✅ Your ability to build muscle or burn fat

Think of food as fuel. If you want your body to perform well, you have to give it the right resources — before and after you train.


🥗 What to Eat to Fuel Like an Athlete

Before Your Workout: Carbs + a Little Protein

The goal here is energy.
Carbohydrates are your body’s preferred fuel source for high-intensity training (yes, even for fat loss).

Examples:

  • A banana with peanut butter
  • Greek yogurt with honey and berries
  • Rice cakes and deli meat
  • Oatmeal with protein powder

💡 Eat ~60–90 minutes before training when possible.


After Your Workout: Protein + Carbs (Again!)

Now it’s time to replenish and repair.
Protein helps rebuild muscle. Carbs help refill your energy stores and reduce muscle breakdown.

Examples:

  • Protein shake + fruit
  • Chicken, rice, and veggies
  • Ground beef with sweet potato
  • Cottage cheese and granola

💡 Aim to eat within 60 minutes post-workout — but don’t stress if it’s not exact.


🔁 But What About Fats?

Fats aren’t your main source of fuel during intense training — and too much fat before a workout can slow digestion.
That said, healthy fats are essential for hormone function, recovery, and long-term performance — so don’t skip them altogether.

Just space them out from your workout window when possible.
